What does ECE 22.06 homologation mean?

ECE 22.06 is the current version of the international safety standard UN Regulation No. 22 for protective motorcycle helmets. Homologation confirms that the helmet type has been tested according to prescribed procedures and meets the required conditions regarding protection, construction, fastening system, field of vision, and other safety features.

The ECE 22.06 standard uses more demanding and comprehensive tests than the previous ECE 22.05 version. Helmets are checked at different speeds and in multiple shell areas, which better assesses their performance in various types of traffic and off-road accidents.

What is checked under the ECE 22.06 standard?

  • Impact energy absorption – verifies how much energy the helmet transfers to the head upon impact.
  • Impacts at different speeds – the helmet is tested at multiple load levels, not just at one speed.
  • Multiple impact zones – various parts of the shell are tested, including additional randomly selected points.
  • Oblique or rotational impacts – also assesses the stress that can cause rotational movement of the head.
  • Shell and inner protective layer strength – verifies the construction's ability to withstand prescribed loads.
  • Helmet stability on the head – the helmet must not easily come off or slip from the head during an accident.
  • Buckle and chin strap strength – the fastening system must remain closed and correctly positioned even under high loads.
  • User's field of vision – the helmet's construction must not dangerously restrict vision while riding.
  • Safety of additional equipment – accessories and attachment points must not reduce the helmet's protective properties.
